A sign of how important these showings are, creative directors were in attendance: Peter Copping of Nina Ricci, Clare Waight Keller of ChloĆ©, Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. Store chiefs turned up as well, along with editors and a few celebrities. . . . Store buyers have said they want to see more fashion in preseason collections, not just a bunch of commercial clothes. For some designers, like Mr. Copping, the challenge is to create more everyday looks — sweaters, skirts, coats — and not just frilly runway treats. His collection had lots of substance, starting with tweeds and other masculine fabrics, and suits that had a relaxed yet polished attitude. They looked like something you’d think about wearing. Also strong were knits and dark coats with reverse lapels. . . ."
