Exceptional Annabel Tollman

Colleagues and friends reflect on the life of the stylist Annabel Tollman, who they say was an exception to the Jungle Law of the fashion industry--

Annabel Tollman - the Calm Amid Fashion’s Storm - NYTimes.com:
The core code of conduct governing fashion can sometimes be characterized as jungle law. According to the unspoken rules of the business, the person you had dinner with last night might, if it is expedient, cut you dead at a fashion show the following morning. Somehow this ugly reality is found usual and acceptable. “Everyone in this industry loves to hate,” Joe Zee, the creative director of Elle magazine, said Tuesday. “Everyone is critical: ‘Oh, it’s fashion week again! I hate that collection! I hate that designer!’ Everything is built up to encourage dislike.”

Resort Fashion

Resort fashion may be hard to define, but it does reveal which designers have a light touch.--

Resort Collections are a Walk on the Whimsical Side - NYTimes.com: "Certainly resort fashion reveals who has a light touch. Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy reprised a number of ideas from his last ready-to-wear collection, like the notion of converting a jacket into a bustier, but the results looked awkward. And the floral-print collages will look wilted on the racks, especially after a few strong print seasons. . . ." (read more at link above)

Nuance marks summer season with sailing theme

Nuance marks summer season with sailing theme across Europe | TheMoodieReport.com: "Nuance has adopted a sailing theme across its stores in Europe, using decoration, event spaces and scents and sounds to mark the summer season. The marine decorations comprise masts, anchors, ropes and lighthouses, transforming the stores into duty free boats, inviting travellers to discover the summer collections, according to Nuance. The retailer said it is aiming to provide a good start to travellers’ trips for business or leisure. Within its nautical themed spaces, summer fragrances are anchored in an area where travellers will hear the voice of seagulls and smell what the retailer claimed to be "the scent of summer".

Antonio Marras Fall/Winter 2013-14 Designer at Work | Milan Fashion Week MFW
Antonio Marras talks to FashionTV from the "set" of his Fall/Winter 2013-2014 collection presentation spectacle in Milan, which showcases a line that is full of a mix of high fashion city meets countryside. "We wanted to recreate a greenhouse, a drawing room, a bedroom, a library, where the women of that period -- I'm talking about the women who were part of the Bloomsbury Circle, lived and moved around in," he says. Therefore, we have sets with actresses with characters such as Simonetta, Benedetta, who really recreate...that is they are expert hostesses."

Vegan With a Dark Side

The creator of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics looks to sci-fi films for inspiration--

A Vegan With a Dark Side - NYTimes.com: " . . . “Venus’ flytraps are sort of my spirit animal,” David Klasfeld said, referring to the lusty pink and green plant tattoos curling around his bicep. “There’s a line from ‘Little Shop of Horrors’: they say the meek shall inherit, and for some reason people are always telling me how humble I am. But I do know what I’m doing, and if anything I’m trying to be aggressive.”. . . The line, completely vegan and “cruelty-free,” includes Loose Colour Concentrate in Twirl, Pool Boy Nail Lacquer, Lip Tar in Anime and Creme Colour Concentrate in Grandma. Mr. Klasfeld, who is as slight and sinewy as the sleepwalker Cesare (tattooed on his shoulder) from the 1920 film “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari,” is a makeup artist and the chief executive, creative director and founder of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. It is best known for a product called Lip Tar that has become a cult favorite among the kind of cutting-edge makeup enthusiasts who also tend to favor the brands Urban Decay and Illamasqua. It is named after his obsessive-compulsive disorder, diagnosed when he was 14. . . . ( read more at link above)

FASHION THERAPY Why you should go hell for leather
Daily Mail
Now, if there is one garment that has, over the past few years, become a wardrobe staple, it’s the biker jacket.
You can trace its reincarnation all the way back to  February, 2010, when Burberry Prorsum sent bright bikers and exaggerated flying jackets down the catwalk over slippy silk dresses. Women were hooked, and since then you can barely move for biker jackets on the High Street. . . .

Miuccia Prada's Influence

Power of One | Miuccia Prada's Circle of Influence - NYTimes.com: " . . . She’ll go on thinking. People will go on buying. And one day we might wake up and find that our everyday reality was actually made by shy and pivotal little geniuses like Miuccia Prada, half-capitalist, half-communist, searching for the next big idea and often finding it very close to home. When I left her, she was still waving the little notecard with the question on it about whether a woman must love herself in order to be happy. As her car sped away under the low, gray Prada sky, I guessed that her answer might be that loving oneself is irrelevant. What’s important is to know yourself. “If it’s fake, it doesn’t work,” she had said. “It has to be true to yourself first and then it might be successful.”"
