Prefall Fashion Shows - Easygoing Tailoring and Tweeds - NYTimes.com: " . . . prefall collections resumed this week after a holiday break (we heard about people’s trips to St. Barth and the Bahamas), with presentations by European brands. A sign of how important these showings are, creative directors were in attendance: Peter Copping of Nina Ricci, Clare Waight Keller of Chloé, Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. Store chiefs turned up as well, along with editors and a few celebrities. . . . Store buyers have said they want to see more fashion in preseason collections, not just a bunch of commercial clothes. For some designers, like Mr. Copping, the challenge is to create more everyday looks — sweaters, skirts, coats — and not just frilly runway treats. His collection had lots of substance, starting with tweeds and other masculine fabrics, and suits that had a relaxed yet polished attitude. They looked like something you’d think about wearing. Also strong were knits and dark coats with reverse lapels. . . ."

Despite any dark moments, however, his passion always seems to come back. “Even when I think that I’m jaded, or that this is just doing ‘this’ again,” he said, “then I get surprised and excited all over again.” Mr. Lagerfeld, by comparison, chooses to gloss over the past. He would never write a memoir because there are people who may have played an unpleasant role in his life, he said, “and I don’t want to give them the pleasure of ever mentioning their name.” But it takes a lot of effort these days to keep people engaged, which is why he has shown recent Chanel collections in far-out places like a castle in Edinburgh. Next time, he said, he wants to show in Dallas. “Today, everything is shown on the net and on TV,” Mr. Lagerfeld said. “When you have a show with only girls coming out of the door and walking across the runway, it is O.K. for the fashion freaks, but the public gets very bored, very quickly. They need some magic around it.” The take-away from this conference, perhaps, is that designers need to keep being titillating, at least for their sake if not ours. . . "

Amazon most satisfying website to shop: survey - Business on NBCNews.com: "Flash sale sites Gilt.com and RueLaLa.com were among the worst performers in online shopping satisfaction this season, according to ForeSee's Holiday E-Retail Satisfaction Index. "The importance of satisfying them and giving a great consumer experience is going to pay back huge dividends in terms of profitability for these retailers," said Larry Freed, president and chief executive officer of ForeSee, which measures customer satisfaction for companies, including retailers. Amazon has held the highest score in each of the eight years of the index, due in part to the wide variety of merchandise it offers and a site that is easy to use. "They've really done a great job in setting the standard for everybody else," Freed said of Amazon. Amazon's score was again 88 out of 100, while Gilt.com and Fingerhut.com shared the lowest score of 72. LLBean.com had the second-highest ranking, 85, up 4 points from a year earlier. "
